The amount charged to you by each credit agency is based on your state of residence, age, and whether or not you have been a victim of ID theft. In addition, in some states, sales tax may apply. There are generally no fees if you have been a victim of ID theft and you have documented proof (e.g., police report) of that event. Fees for people who have not been a victim of ID theft range from $0 to $10 per agency with the exception of Nebraska ($15) and Delaware ($20).
For example, regardless of age and regardless of being a documented victim of ID theft, Indiana residents receive this service free of all charges from the 3 credit agencies. This includes the initial request and temporary or permanent freeze lifts. If you were a documented victim of ID theft, the vast majority of states will charge no fee for an initial credit freeze. If you were not a documented victim of ID theft, most agencies will charge you $10 for this service, but the fees range from $3 to $10 with the exception of Nebraska ($15) and Delaware ($20). Sales tax on top of their fees may also be applied in some instances. |
